The form on our homepage asks for your name, email address and a message, and optionally your company, a project budget range and what you need help with. When you submit it, our server also records your IP address, your browser’s user-agent string (which identifies the browser and operating system) and the time of the submission.
We use this to reply to your enquiry and discuss possible work with you. The IP address, user agent and time help us recognise spam and abuse. Your IP address is also held in memory for up to 10 minutes to limit repeated submissions.
Each submission is saved to a file on our server and sent by email to two inboxes we control: one on our own mail server and one Gmail account. Our server’s application log also records the time, IP address and email address of each submission.
If you write to us directly, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message, and use them to reply.
Like most websites, our web server keeps standard access logs of the requests it receives: your IP address, the date and time, the address of the page or file requested (including anything after a “?” in the address), the referring page and your browser’s user-agent string. We use these logs to operate and secure the site and to diagnose problems.
We do not take Bootstrapt purchases online. The site has no checkout form, collects no card details and charges no cards. To get the book, contact us.
The Bootstrapt checkout page now only explains how to reach us. It has no form, and our server refuses any purchase request sent to it without saving anything from the request.
Records from earlier test purchases are held on our server in a file named private-bootstrapt/purchases.jsonl. A record holds an email address, a name, the amount, the time and a download key, and a record created through the old test checkout could also hold the last four digits of the card number entered and the IP address. Our application log also records the time and email address of each earlier test purchase. No full card numbers, CVCs or expiry dates were saved.
A download link already issued from one of these records can still be used by anyone who has it.
We do not use Google Analytics, advertising pixels or third-party trackers. We use one first-party engagement measure, the Klimb beacon, to learn which pages hold readers’ attention.
Our pages load a small script from https://autana.ca/klimb/api/t.js. When you hide or close the tab, it sends the following to our analytics service at autana.ca:
The beacon sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device. It uses a random identifier that is created fresh for each page view, so views cannot be linked to each other. The analytics service does not store your IP address or user agent. It uses your IP address only in memory, to limit how many requests it accepts, and discards it within a minute. Raw page views are deleted after 90 days.
If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, the beacon does nothing at all.
The beacon’s request reaches the autana.ca web server like any other web request, so it appears in that server’s standard access logs (see how long we keep it).
We share personal information only with the providers below, and only as needed for them to provide their service, except where the law requires otherwise.
Cloudflare and Google may process information outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessible to authorities under local law.
